Editing wedding videos

Much of the cost of producing a wedding video goes on the time spent on editing. This important step converts the raw footage into a polished film - so any corner-cutting or less than professional standard will result in a very poor quality wedding video. All the wedding videos that we film will involve several days editing before the finished DVDs are finally produced. Obviously, the skill and experience of the editor is paramount during this stage.

Stringing pearls on the necklace

So why does video editing take so long? We start by checking the raw video footage in the finest detail. Several hundred separate clips, varying from a few seconds to several minutes in length, are checked for colour-balance, audio levels and suitability. Where two or more cameras are used to film your wedding, it can involve several hours of footage and a thousand or more clips!

Like a pearl necklace, each clip is added one at a time to the timeline to slowly build the story of your day. Backing music soundtracks are used, where applicable, to create atmosphere and mood. Special effects are added where suitable to enhance the footage and finally, opening and closing titles are added. As you will appreciate, this all takes considerable time and skill.

The importance of the edit and the skill of the editor can't be overstated. All things being equal, the way the video is edited will determine if it is ordinary and perhaps a bit boring, or fresh, exciting and unique. The style of editing will also create a particular 'feel' and atmosphere to the video, which is why you will have a full say into the style, music and content of the finished DVD.

Making the DVD

The final stage is DVD authoring and mastering, when we create chapter points and menus. The finished DVDs are finally produced and cellophane wrapped in personalised cases for the ’brand new feeling’. From checking the raw footage through to producing the finished DVDs will typically take several days.
