Choosing your wedding videographer
Your
wedding video will probably be the most important reminder of your wedding day. As there is only one chance to get it right, it is important to choose your videographer with care. We hope our guidelines will give you an idea of the questions to ask and what to look for.
- Does your videographer have any qualifications or belong to a recognized association? As with any business, there are many unskilled and unqualified people offering wedding video services. Check that they are qualified and experienced
- Are they full-time videographers or part-timers earning weekend pocket money? While there are many skilled part-timers, they are unlikely to be able to give your wedding video their full-time attention. They often do not have the income stream to keep their filming and editing equipment up-to-date.
- Will they be filming and editing in high-definition? Within the next year or two high-definition will become the main standard, so it makes sense to have your wedding filmed in high-definition ready to be made into a high-def DVD when you update your TV and DVD player. Be wary of those who only film in Hi-Def. It is important that the final edit is in Hi-Def as well.
- Are they legal? Do they have all the necessary insurances to cover them against public and professional liability? Will they be supplying all the legally required licenses to use [copyright] music on your wedding video? If they don't care (or don't know) about their legal responsibilities, at best they are unprofessional, at worse they are cowboys.
- If they supply a demonstration disc, is the footage throughout clear, vibrant, focused and sharp? Is the audio clear and crisp? Has it been edited in a modern style? Remember, this is their best work, so it should be of the highest standard. If it isn't and this is the best they produce, what sort of standard will your wedding video be?
- Can you see other examples of their work? You may get a stunning demo disc, but is it really representative of what your wedding video will look like? You really need to see some examples of actual wedding videos to see how they film and edit full length videos.
- Will they be using additional microphones during the ceremony and speeches to ensure crisp, clear audio, or simply relying on their on-camera microphone? The wedding ceremony and speeches are a central part of the day. Both of these require the best possible audio which simply isn't possible with only an on-camera microphone.
- Will they have back-up equipment on the day? Even the best maintained equipment can develop faults or breakdown, usually at a critical moment. We always carry back-up cameras, lights and microphones, so even if a major equipment fault occurs, we can carry on filming your wedding. Our latest cameras also have dual capture modes, so that vital parts of the day are captured to both tape and solid-state media, giving us an automatic back-up version. It is this attention to detail that separates the true professional from the well-intentioned amateur.
"there is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and those who consider price alone are this man's legal prey"
JOHN RUSKIN
